What happens in the first session?

Great question! When you arrive, please have a seat in our waiting room and help yourself to some water, tea, or coffee. At your appointment time, your therapist will greet you and invite you into our confidential office. Your therapist will invite you to share your story and will help you articulate why you are seeking help at this time. Our only goal is to help you be happier. That is it. So we will find out from you what is not working and help you make it better. If all goes well, you and your therapist will then decide how often you will meet and what issues you will work on together.

How do I get started?

How do I pay for counseling?

At Counseling of Alexandria, we believe that entering into psychotherapy as an investment for yourself, your child or your family in having a better future. We also believe in making the process as painless as possible. In addition to providing statements to submit for reimbursement from insurance, we offer scholarships on a case-by-case basis. We are especially committed to serving fellow mental health professionals, first-responders, and emergency room staff. For your convenience, we accept cash, checks, most U.S.-issued credit cards (see below) and credit cards linked to Health Savings Accounts.  While we accept only limited insurance plans, (Cigna and BCBS) the majority of our clients are able to utilize their out-of-network benefits. Most insurance providers reimburse for service providers outside of their plan. As a courtesy, we will provide the documentation necessary for reimbursement monthly or as requested.
